Our Ceramic Studio in Lebrija: Mediaeval Spanish Pottery Brought to Life

Guadalquivir River valley near Lebrija, SpainWe first discovered the distinctive shapes and beautiful designs of Julia's cerámica while exploring the broad flatlands of the Guadalquivir River delta south of Sevilla. This is a broad landscape of rolling hills and rich flatlands;a land of rice paddies and cotton fields. This remarkable workshop is nestled in the small delta town of Lebrija, an agricultural centre also known for its clay production (now mostly utilized in the construction industry) and for its flamenca performers, both dancers and singers.

Lebrija studio near Sevilla, SpainIn fact, this studio is a cooperative of three owners and two employees established in 1985, Julia being both potter and design painter as well as the group's spokesperson. They are justifiably famous throughout the Province of Sevilla for their reproductions of traditional Andalucian forms, which are absolutely exquisite, many of which are embellished with a 'crackling' glaze that gives the impression of antiques. We have seen these same graceful forms in the Museums of Sevilla and Cádiz, among others and were astonished to see in Julia's workshop such faithful reproductions. Interestingly, although Lebrija is famous for its clay production and in the past exported clay to many other areas, including Sevilla, modern ceramics demand a finer quality of clay than was acceptable in the past and now Julia imports clay from Valencia.

Paqui, hand painting tiles in her studioJulia's sure and elegant forms are augmented through the creation of a number of gorgeous reproduction designs from past traditions in Andalucia as well as several modern interpretations. We are extremely pleased to offer three of their different design styles, all hand made and hand painted by Julia and Paqui.

Spanish ceramics - Arabé collectionOur 'Arabé' collection is a traditional geometric/floral design from the 15th century, faithfully recreated both in design and colour.

Spanish ceramics - Mediaeval collectionThe 'Mediaeval' collection consists of reproductions of 17th and 18th century country scenes commonly found on ceramics of this period. By the 18th century, the most famous of these scenes had become 'stylised' and were faithfully reproduced in every detail by various artists throughout Andalucia.

Spanish ceramics - Herbal collectionWe are very proud to showcase our 'Herbal' collection which is a modern interpretation of a number of traditional floral designs and which has been lovingly developed by Julia, herself.
